Exploration Projects

3D-GEO is an independent technical group that is not constrained by software selection or share price. From our home base in Melbourne, Australia, we have conducted interpretations throughout the region, including;

PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Provision of structural-seismic solutions for the last 10 years in complex PNG Fold Belt settings, including projects in foreland and northern basins. Covered 90% of major and new fields, directly addressing compartmentalisation and optimisation of highly faulted oil and gas fields through detailed field investigations and structural-seismic reinterpretation. Kutubu, Moran, Gobe, SE Mananda Oilfields, Western Fold Belt, North Coast, Pacific Islands of PNG. (see attached CVs for full listing of basin experience).

Locations of 3D-GEO projects
3D-Geo have conducted a series of basin-wide play fairway projects over the last few years. These range from a thorough review of the Exmouth Plateau offshore NW Australia (with over 96,000km of 2D seismic and multiple 3D surveys) to the Malay Basin, Malaysia. We will briefly describe some of these projects below.

In some cases, 3D-GEO has acted as overall co-ordinator of third-party services – co-ordinating the delivery of specialist sub-tasks and integrating the whole study to Play Fairway and Prospect Seriatim stage. In other projects, we have acted very much in the role described for the present study, integrating our geotechnical expertise including detailed permit mapping, sequence stratigraphy, maturation and charge modeling, and culminating in Play Fairway to Prospect-level risking as required by the client.


EXMOUTH PLATEAU (offshore NW Australia)
3D-GEO was commissioned by a British petroleum company to conduct a thorough review of the Exmouth Plateau to include well and seismic sequence stratigraphy, detailed seismic interpretation, and both present-day and palaeostructural maturation/migration studies. This was a very interesting and challenging project as the area has fields reservoired in Triassic fluvial sands in classic horst and graben topography, Jurassic sands deposited in a shallow marine environment with bars and tidal influenced depositional features and massive Cretaceous prograding deltas. The area is gas prone with amplitude anomalies present on many of the fields. A detailed prospect risk seriatim incorporating DHI and AVO studies was required to rank over 100 prospects and leads.

BROWSE BASIN (offshore Northern Australia)
3D-GEO has conducted several projects on the Browse Basin for a variety of clients. The themes of these projects have been the evolution of the Australian continental margin and its associated Jurassic/Triassic basins through the process of subsidence, sedimentation, and foundering into deepwater environments. The variability of palaeobathymetry through time and its control of the distribution and nature of deepwater sediments such as submarine fan sands is a key aspect of these studies.
In 2001-02, 3D-GEO (then a Research Group at the University of Melbourne) conducted a series of 2D structural restorations across the Browse Basin, in two independent studies for Geoscience Australia and BHP Petroleum. The results were used to derive important new concepts in deepwater sequence stratigraphy and to study the evolution of the Browse Basin from terrestrial/ shallow marine Triassic and Jurassic to deeper water Uppermost Jurassic and Cretaceous settings. The basin was interpreted in terms of a multiphase structural break-up with local inversions, uplift and minor wrenching. Subsequent tectonics can largely be understood in terms of differential subsidence over the inherited structural framework. The publicly-funded parts of this study led to several publications and conference presentations.
In 2005-06, 3D-Geo Pty Ltd conducted detailed studies of the Browse and Bonaparte Basins for British Gas in support of their participation in exploration acreage in the Browse Basin. Major basinwide studies and detailed local 2D and 3D interpretation projects were included in an overall work programme (122,000 km 2D seismic and 150 wells).
Over the last 2 years 3D-GEO has been commissioned by a Japanese client to review and integrate their gasfield reservoir information into a regional depositional setting, with a total of 4 separate contracts progressively looking at the detailed sequence stratigraphy and depositional settings of the whole basin, and then focusing on several clastic reservoir sequences to determine new exploration potential in the basin. The project database consists of 74,000 km of 2D seismic, 6,500 sq Km of 3D data and 70 wells. Cores through the reservoir were reviewed and a depositional model for the company’s development program was constructed. This project is particularly relevant to the proposed Cauvery Basin project, as basalt flows within the Field often filled the channel system, blocking clastic deposition and modifying reservoir distribution of the sandstones.

MALAY BASIN and OFFSHORE SARAWAK (Malaysia)
Also in 2005-06, 3D-Geo Pty Ltd conducted two major studies for Murphy Oil Corporation in Malaysia (demonstrating that 3D-GEO is capable of conducting multiple parallel projects without loss of focus or any delay to the client). Comprehensive seismic sequence stratigraphy studies of the Malay Basin and offshore Sarawak involved similar volumes of 2D seismic and well data with similar goals of understanding the depositional history and sequence architecture of the basin in a valid structural context. Goals included highgrading of reservoir fairways and understanding the interaction of structure, sedimentation, and source maturity and hydrocarbon trapping. In each study, 3D-GEO led and coordinated a diverse team of expert consultants, assembled specifically for the study, as well as contributing interpretation, mapping and play-fairway core skills to the project. Many of the same staff would be devoted to this study for ONGC.

OTWAY/GIPPSLAND BASINS
(on- and offshore Southern Australia)
3D-GEO is currently undertaking a series of linked projects for the Victorian State Government in the Otway and Gippsland basins with the goal of building a single coherent public-access 3D database for multiple end-users including Petroleum, Geothermal, Carbon Sequestration, and other mineral uses. The project includes database conditioning, seismic interpretation, sequence Stratigraphy, facies analysis, mapping, AVO analysis, gas chimney modeling and fairway analysis across seven or more sub-basins. Basalt flows and other Volcanics are also present in the Otway Basin sediment sequence, masking seismic character and disrupting sediment distribution.

COOPER/EROMANGA BASINS
(onshore central Australia)
In 2008-09, 3D-GEO undertook a major onshore project in the Australian Cooper-Eromanga Basin for an Australian client. The project involved recovery of very poorly-documented digital and paper data from the relevant government agency and rebuilding of an integrated seismic and well database with valid navigation, consistent time and depth datumns, and uniform, seismic phase. A basin-wide seismic interpretation and sequence stratigraphic project was conducted in parallel with the data conditioning due to the short time-frame available and the entire project was delivered in less than 12 months. A Prospect Seriatim, prospect montages and a 180 page comprehensive report were the project deliverables.
