As the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal, China is becoming increasingly interested in CCS technology. The China Coal Information Institute describes the range of activities being undertaken by China in relation to coal and clean coal technology.

China signed an agreement with the European Union (EU) in September 2005 to intensify cooperation on climate change, and focus on concrete, practical measures to bring forward the development of low carbon technologies. A centrepiece of the Partnership is collaboration to demonstrate the potential for advanced near-zero emissions coal (nZEC) and CCS in China.

The nZEC project aims to bring forward the time when new Chinese coal plants are built with CCS. It is hoped nZEC will lead to a demonstration project starting up between 2010 and 2015.
